UME - The Special Unit of the Spanish Military

They belong to the best trained specialists of the Spanish military and have been in action on Lanzarote and the other Canary Islands for many years. The areas of operation of the 'Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME)' include forest fires and virus control as well as targeted support after the volcanic eruption on La Palma.

In Lanzarote, the special unit was deployed in the context of the COVID pandemic. The UME not only worked in the area of airport security, but also, at the request of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, in five children's centres (four in Arrecife and one in Tinajo), in the social services offices of the Cabildo and the social services offices in Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Playa Honda, in the offices of the local police in San Bartolomé and in numerous doctors' surgeries.

"The work of the UME is essential, it provides additional security and reinforces the work of our staff in those areas we consider particularly sensitive" - Dolores Corujo

The Military Emergency Unit (UME) celebrated its 17th anniversary on Friday 7 October 2022. On the day of its patron saint, the Virgen del Rosario , various military events are realised throughout Spain.

On the occasion of this day, the Spanish Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, took advantage of an institutional visit to Zaragoza to congratulate the members of the Fourth Intervention Battalion (BIEM IV) and thus all the members for the work they have done with "renunciation, humility, discipline and sacrifice".
